How to Mix Henna for Hair Color

Blending your own henna hair dye allows you to customize your final hair color. It's fun to adjust and mix your own color and it eliminates the possibility of getting strange results from boxed products. Learn to mix your own henna hair color according to your length, initial hair color and hair thickness for the best possible results.

Things You'll Need :
Bowl
Spoon
Quality henna
Lemon or lime juice
Tin foil or Saran wrap

Instructions :

Purchase the ingredients. Any lemon or lime juice will be fine, however, the fresher the henna, the better results you will get. Using old or questionable henna can affect the outcome of your hair color.

Analyze your starting hair color and attributes. Henna cannot lighten your hair, so consider the results you want. If your hair is light, expect a brighter red. If your hair is darker, expect the red henna color to blend into an auburn tint. The sun will add to this effect. Determine how long, thick and coarse your hair is before mixing the henna dye.

Measure the henna powder. Use approximately 100 grams of henna powder for every shoulder length. So, for shoulder-length hair, use 100 grams of powder; for hair falling to below the shoulder blades, use 200 grams. Precise measurement is not necessary; fine-tune the measurements to achieve your desired results. The same is true for thicker hair; add extra henna powder according to your judgment.

Place the henna powder in a bowl and add lemon or lime juice. Add enough juice to make a thickened paste with the consistency of toothpaste. Cover the bowl and refrigerate until the dye color changes from green to brown. It takes about one day for the dye to fully mature.

Remove the dye from the refrigerator and add more juice until the thickness resembles that of regular hair dye or softened yogurt. Mix the dye thoroughly and apply it directly onto dry or dampened hair. Leave the henna on until the desired color is achieved; to test, wash a small strand of hair and examine the color. Re-coat your hair with the henna mix if you want darker results.
